The Vu Wedding
First of all, the venue effectively sits on top of a reservoir so under the right weather conditions (sunny with clouds in the sky) you can capture some absolutely spectacular couples shots. Unfortunately on the day and in typical Scottish weather fashion the sky was plain white on the day but nonetheless it really is a lovely venue to get married in.
Getting to the venue, it’s a roughly 30 minute drive from Edinburgh city centre and you have to weave up into the hills to get to it. When you go into the venue you see the main wedding venue where they hold the ceremonies and host the dance in the evening. In front of you is the main building which is a bar/restaurant area and part of the venue sits on top of Ballencrief Reservoir which makes for a really great photography spot (with the right weather conditions).
I was hired for this wedding though a referral from a friend I used to work with a few years ago (thanks Derek!) and I was there for pretty much the whole day. I went to the bride’s mother’s flat for the preparation shots (which incidentally is about 2 minutes away from where I live) then following that had a small mad dash over the venue where I photographed guests mingling in the bar area. It was then ceremony time and I photographed guests arriving, the ceremony itself and then a number of group shots afterwards. Following this everyone took a break then we focused on couples shots for a while then it was meal time.
My day ended a few dances in but the whole day was great. Everyone was really nice to work with, the whole day was paced perfectly and apart from it being absolutely baltic cold on the day (Scottish February) it was a great day.
